HURRAY!! Big Basin Bus Service Restored!
Thanks to all who signed our petition and wrote letters of support, the Metro Board of Directors voted unanimously on April 12 to restore summer weekend service to Big Basin State Park. A total of 286 signed our petiton, many with thoughtful comments, all of which were presented to the Metro Board at their meeting.
Service is planned to start on the weekend of June 8 and 9, and will run through the late Fall, with two trips each weekend day extending the Route #35A to Big Basin Park Headquarters (morning and evening), and one late afternoon trip each weekend day extending Route #40 to Waddell Beach.
The #35A bus will depart from the Pacific Avenue Metro station at 8:30 am and 6:30 pm, arriving at the Big Basin Park Headquarters at 9:45 am and 7:45 pm respectively. It will depart from Big Basin shortly after it arrives there to return to Santa Cruz.
The #40 bus will depart from the Pacific Avenue Metro station at 4:30 pm, arriving at Waddell Beach at 5:15 pm, then returning to Santa Cruz at 5:55 pm.
Thanks are especially due to Metro's General Manager Les White and his staff, who were instrumental in avoiding a last-minute threat that would have reduced funding sources to Metro, and may have caused the Metro Board to delay approval of the bus service. However, as it turned out, there was no need to discuss this complication, and the positive staff report was presented, and approved by the Board, on a motion by Director McPherson.
We've prepared a new web page that provides details on how, using the bus, to hike from the Park Headquarters to Waddell Beach. The page has useful maps and helpful time points, for those who may be unfamiliar with Big Basin's trails.
